About this Bike Frame:

A collectible bicycle frame made as a *Special Order* by SBDU at Raleigh.

C 1978

Special Order no H571

Special Order number was used to fork and frame to denote match to the order

Modified with frame improvements during it's life - possibly at the time of renovation or before

Previously Renovated by Fred James of Alford, Lincolnshire . Fred James the Bike Business is no longer in existence.

Frame has SB number on bottom bracket which can be seen in the photos.

Note also the secondary number h571(Special Order No.) and the frame size 58.5 on the Bottom Bracket.

The Number 571 is also found on the fork steerer but not the SB number. Please refer to website Raleigh -sb4059;

RGF Bottom Bracket

Campagnolo Drilled ends and braze on Campagnolo Gear Cable guides above BB

Prugnat Lugs - Centre Cut Out( this was a feature of some of the pro frames Raleigh produced)

Reynolds 753 Tubing - the frame requires a 27mm seat post

Information from SB frame Guru: Neil McGowran made this assessment of SB1085

" the frame looks like it has a mix of renovation work with the addition of cable stops and lever bosses, and also repair work with new chainstays and poss new seat stays. The chainstay bridge is wrong, the brake bridge is wrong, and the ends of the chainstays are domed and not cut in the SBDU style"

Anyone would be in agreement with this, I'd assume that Fred James had been accredited by Reynolds to work on 753, hence his use of the 753R badge.

I'd also assume that the initial owner, who wanted a special order frame from the onset , also desired the later advancements adding to his frame, under tube brake cable guides, a second bottle cage and lever bosses for example.

Measurements:

Top Tube Centre to Centre: 57cm

Seat Tube ; Top to Centre: 58.5cm & Centre to Centre: 57.5cm

Wheels Required: 700c

Spacing for wheels : Front: 100mm / Rear : 128mm

Frame weight ( as in picture) : 2.48 kg

Nicely finished frame ,

The frame is serial numbered on the bottom bracket, along with frame size and an additional number of H571.

The fork steerer confirms the number '571' being a match for fork and frame. However, I am not aware of the significance of the number 571. The SB number would normally be on the fork steerer but can not be found. However I have no doubt the forks are original to the frame.

Other:

Included : Headset

Age of frame 1978

There is a slight rub on the seat tube where the front derailleur has been fixed.

Additionally , the frame has chips and marks but is comfortable without need for repainting. The paint has been finished well. I presume this was done when Fred James had it as part of renovation. There is evidence of 3 tinny little knocks on the top tube , probably from the years of storing - they can only be seen under direct light - so are very smal
